Building Safe Public Spaces for Women in Two Vietnam Cities

The 6th Global Leaders Forum on Safe Cities and Public Spaces, organized by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, took place in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, from November 28 to 30.

More than 20 countries participated in the forum, including delegates from Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang in Vietnam.

Quito is one of the founding cities of the Global Key Program on Safe Cities and Public Spaces, which was established in 2011. So far, 56 cities in 31 countries have participated in the program. Da Nang became the 56th city to join this initiative on November 20.

This forum is a valuable opportunity for cities to gain access to knowledge and technical support, as well as to connect with a network of cities participating in the program. It aims to address violence against women and children, develop safe public spaces, and contribute to sustainable development.

During the forum, delegates discussed various topics, including strengthening the participation of multiple stakeholders, tools and lessons to prevent sexual harassment and other forms of sexual violence against women in public spaces, and policies to support the implementation of safe cities and spaces programs.

Representatives from Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang also shared their policies and interventions with other members at the event.

Hoang Thi Thu Huong, President of the Da Nang Women’s Union, shared the effective policies implemented in Da Nang. The city has established 21 clubs dedicated to preventing and responding to violence against women and children in different districts. The “Orange – Light Up and Take Action” program has helped promote Da Nang’s commitment to gender equality and safety for women and children.
